What to do if you have little time : a short hike on the Mesa

North Caineville Mesa has become in recent years a place not to be missed. However, the satisfaction you get from exploring this place will be proportional to your ability to climb as high as possible. This place is not recommended for people prone to vertigo.

This hike, although short, is very difficult. The beginning on the gray hills is quite easy but as soon as you reach the bottom of the Mesa, things get complicated. The trail is not really marked and it is mainly composed of rocks and pebbles. From there, it goes up seriously and because of the composition of the path, it becomes slippery.

It is a hike where you have to be well aware of your abilities and not go beyond. Do not take chances for a simple view.

As far as we are concerned, we did not go to the top, far from it.

The view is already nice as soon as you take a little height.

Access : on Highway 24, between Hanksville and Capitol Reef, park at the concrete mixer (N38°20'47.7" W110°58'52.0").

We have tested :

Torrey - Days Inn : good hotel with a pool, spa and continental breakfast.
Torrey - Thousand Lakes RV Park : even though the pitches are small, this campsite is rather nice and well equipped. There is even a restaurant. A house equipped with tables allows campers to be protected from wind and rain. $ 20 in May 2018.

Hanksville - Duke's Slickrock Campground & RV : campground well equiped with a grassy area for the tents. 22$ tent site in april 2022.
