Kodachrome Basin State Park - Utah
What to do if you have little time : Panorama Trail
This State Park is located on the Cottonwood Canyon Road just before it becomes a track when coming from Cannonville. Temperatures in summer are high, but night are cooler.
Kodachrome is a State Park and there is an entrance fee which is not include in the Pass "America The Beautiful". The fee is 8$ per vehicle or 19$ with a night of camping.
Panorama Trail
3,1 miles one way
1 to 2 hours
8$
Easy hike of about 6 miles roundtrip up to Panorama Point. Only the end of the trail going to Panorama Point is steep. Otherwise, the rest is relatively flat. This walk provides an overview of the park. To be done in late afternoon to have the most beautiful colors.
Chimney Rock
No hike
Half an hour
8$
This is only a view of a huge rock, planted in the middle of nowhere. Not of great interest.
Kodachrome by night
No hike
1 or 2 hours
8$ or 19$ if you're camping
This park is a great place for starry night amateurs. The sky is indeed of an exceptional quality and light pollution is totally absent.
Photo tip : it is useless to have a telescope to get some very nice results. The only requirement is to have an SLR camera and a tripod of course. The best is to have a lens with a large aperture and / or a camera that can climb high enough in the ISO. With a wide angle (15-20mm) lens, you can try exposures up to 10 or 12 seconds before the stars begin to form streaks.
