Bryce Canyon National Park - Utah

What to do if you have little time : the viewpoints

Bryce Canyon is an absolutely exceptional site. How to consider a trip to the American West without going through Bryce Canyon. This park is unavoidable. You will understand, it is one of our favorites. But we are not the only one to appreciate this park. Attendance is very important and it is not a place where you can easily be alone. A system of free shuttles allows you to go from one point to another without having to galley to find parking places to the most frequented viewpoints.

Like all national parks, a contribution is required at the entrance to the park. It is $35 per vehicle. If you have the "America the beautiful" pass, access is included.

We recommend you to spend at least 2 days to the visit of the park.

    Rim Trail and the Viewpoints

    Exceptional site

The Rim Trail is an 11 miles round-trip hike allowing you to walk along the canyon through the viewpoints. The part ranging from Bryce Point to Sunrise Point is probably the most interesting and makes about 3,1 miles one way. It is made very easily and is accessible to all.

For those who do not wish to do the Rim Trail, it is possible to borrow the shuttles that take from viewpoints to viewpoints.

The sunrise is a privileged moment because the light gives a very orange tint to the hoodoos. Sunrise Point is the perfect place for this. The sunset is rather disappointing because the amphitheater of Bryce is oriented towards the East and the canyon quickly finds itself in the shade.

    Descent in the Canyon

    Place not to miss

Several trails allow you to discover the canyon from the inside. We did :

    • Navajo Loop is the most popular trail. It's a loop of 1,2 miles starting at Sunset Point. It can be combined with Queens Garden to go back up to Sunrise Point (1,8 miles).
    • Navajo Peekaboo Combination loop : loop of 5 miles. Peekaboo part is very pretty but a little stiff. It has great views.

North and South Viewpoints (route 63)

Place to visit if you're in the area

Length and duration of the hikeNo hike

Time to spend 1 to 2 hours

     $30 per vehicle

    • South : Swamp Canyon, Farview Point and Piracy Point, Natural Bridge (nice !), Agua Canyon, Ponderosa Point, Rainbow Point and Yovimpa Point. The only one that's really worth is Natural Bridge.
    • North : Fairyland Point, it's not exceptionnal.

    To see around

    • Red Canyon
    • Kodachrome Basin State Park

    Lodging

    We have tested :

    • North and Sunset Campground : very pleasant campsites located in the park surrounded by pine trees. North Campground is close to the canyon but the campsites are smaller. Sunset Campground is a little farther from the canyon but the sites are very spacious. The only available showers are at the General Store for $2. Shuttles (stops at the campgrounds) can be used to move from one place to another without taking the car. $20 a site.

    • Ruby's Inn Campground : huge campground with tent sites, bungalows and teepees. The bathrooms are very clean. $32 for 3 people (2 tents) in 2013.
