In this page, you will find informations and advices we can give, based on our experience

    Soap Creek - Arizona

What to do if you have little time : you need a full day to visit Soap Creek

Soap Creek is very uncrowded because very difficult to access. It is a vast area of very colored rocks with tormented relief. We discover some hoodoos and access to a view of the Colorado Canyon.

Unlike its neighbors The Wave or Coyote Buttes South, there is no need for a permit to come to Soap Creek.

Tip : the access road to Soap Creek is very long (46,5 miles - 2h30 with an Outfitters, much more if you go with your own vehicle) and very sandy, we advise you to go with a guide or have a good 4WD and, above all, know how to use it. For our part, we made the visit with Paria Outpost & Outfitters, specialists in the area. In addition, these outfitters know the area very well and will lead you directly to the most beautiful sights of Soap Creek, which you probably could not find on your own.

The temperatures are very high in summer, often higher than 95°F. The region being desert, there is very little shade. It is therefore necessary to provide a lot of water : about 3 liters per person.

The hike, if you do it with a guide, is a 4 miles loop. Apart from the heat, there is no particular difficulty on this hike, only certain passages climb. Before arriving at Soap Creek, our guide introduced us to a place called Joes Tank, where we can see very pretty white rocks shaped like fish scales. Soap Creek is, meanwhile, full of colors: pink, yellow, orange... At GPS point N36° 46'52.0" W111°46'01.8", we discover a rocky wall with incredible colors in the middle of which is a small tunnel like the entrance of a den. From here, continuing a little to the south, there is a view of the Colorado Canyon.

Access : access to Soap Creek is through a criss-cross of sandy tracks that are hard to describe in words. If you want to go there by yourself, it's better to download our GPS track. However, we do not recommend going alone because, as mentioned above, the place is very isolated and in case of problems, there is little chance to find someone to assist you.

    Lodging

The accommodations, although abundant in Page, are however insufficient and very expensive. It becomes very difficult to find accommodation in Page. We strongly advise you to book in advance. Otherwise, you may not find accommodation or pay very expensive. We have tested :

    • Page - Wahweap Campground : campsite located on the edge of lake Powell. This campground is large with many locations. These sites are large, equipped with a table and a barbecue. There is however only a few shady locations. The prices are quite high ($ 26 in 2014). The toilets are new and very clean (pay showers). There is a small supermarket at the office, to buy cold drinks or ice for the coolers.

    Camping de Page

    •  Lone Rock : campsite located on Lake Powell. No location defines, no table or pit fire. Dry toilets available. $ 14 per night in 2017. Emergency solution when the Wahweap Campground is full and the hotels are overpriced.

    • Page - Rodeway Inn : located in the center of Page. Hotel consistent with what you would expect from these chains. Breakfast included. Very high price but it is "normal" we are in Page ($ 220 per room for 4 people in September 2017).
    • Kanab - Hitch N Post :  very nice little camping under the almond trees. Very warm welcome by a former National Park ranger. The sites are large enough to put 2 tents. The price is $ 23 per night (in September 2014).
    • Kanab - Crazy Horse Campark : campground with old restrooms and not well marked tent sites. 23$ per night in september 2017.

    • Kanab - Red Rock Country Inn : classic motel, no breakfast, only coffee (the room for 4 is 78$ in september 2017).
