Horseshoe Bend Overlook - Arizona
What to do if you have little time : Horseshoe
Here, the Colorado draws a horseshoe around the rock. We have a spectacular view from the cliff. Be careful not to get too close to the edge because there is no protection and the slightest inattention can be fatal. This is especially important for photographers who use wide- angle objectives.
Tip : Avoid going there too early, as the canyon is in shadow. Conversely, avoid going there too late in the afternoon as you will be against the light. The ideal is around 10 am and around 3 pm. At sunset, it's possible to take nice pictures.
Since September 2017, work has begun. This concerns an extension of the car park to accommodate more vehicles and buses; a trail adapted for people with reduced mobility that bypasses the old sand hill with shelters and benches; barriers to the point of view to secure the area and avoid falls. Eventually, a visitor center will be built and the site will probably pay.
It's worth noting that 20 years ago, on our first trip to the American West, Horseshoe was a wild place and ignored even for most people in Page. Since then, attendance has steadily increased and today several thousand people come here every day. Developments were - so it seems - necessary, but no doubt that the wild side of Horseshoe will take a serious blow !...
Update april 2019 : the parking lot and all the accomodations for Horseshoe Bend are now completed. It now cost 10$ to park your car.
Horseshoe Bend Overlook
The hike (0,6 mile one way) is quite short but the beginning is hard as the path is in sand. Then it goes down to the rim of the canyon.
Access : from Page, take US89 south toward Flagstaff until you see "P" painted on the hill on the left. Then take right to parking.

Lodging
The accommodations, although abundant in Page, are however insufficient and very expensive. It becomes very difficult to find accommodation in Page. We strongly advise you to book in advance. Otherwise, you may not find accommodation or pay very expensive. We have tested :
