Grand Canyon National Park - Arizona

What to do if you have little time : South Rim Walk

The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River about 280 miles long and a width that varies from 3 to 18 miles. Its depth can be up to 6560 feet. It is a must of the American Southwest both for its grandeur and its beauty. It has been part of national parks since 1919.

The Grand Canyon can be explored from all angles: by the southern rim (the most touristic), by the north rim (much more wild), by the air (helicopter flight) or by a descent to the bottom of the canyon (trails).

Like all national parks, a contribution is requested at the entrance to the park. It is $ 35 per vehicle. If you have the "America the beautiful" pass, access is included.

The hike along South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the main attraction of the park. There are 3  options :

    • The 8 miles hike. It runs along the canyon through several viewpoints. This option is the most dangerous as some par of the trail are on the edge of the canyon, without protection. The return can be using the free shuttles.
    • Free shuttles : they take you from one viewpoint to an other. This solution is less fun because it gonly gives a partial view of the canyon. It is however done safely because the viewpoints are arranged.
    • You can also combined the 2 first options : walk on some portion of the trail then take a shuttle whenever you like.

We recommend you should not miss the sunset at Mather Point.

Access : from Flagstaff, follow road 180 north.

    North Rim

The viewpoints are numerous and, for the most part, easily accessible. We went to :

    • Bright Angel Point : this viewpoint is in full light at noon
    • Imperial Point : pretty point of view, to visit in the afternoon
    • Angels Window : impressive arch and viewpoint with the emptiness on each side, favor the afternoon
    • Cape Royal : very nice point of view in the afternoon and late afternoon.

Access : from Kanab on US89, take 89A South, pass Fredonia and continue to Jacob Lake (37 miles). Then follow Route 67 to the park entrance.

    To see around

    From South rim :

    • Havasu Falls
    • Route 66
    • Sunset Crater

From North rim, we are far from everything.

    Lodging

     We have tested :

    • Tusayan - Grand Canyon Camper Village : located a few hundreds meters before the park entrance. It was a good campsite during our trips up to year 2000. But in 2007, we found it very poor, expensive,  toilets were not clean and the showers were not working. And so was the welcome ! TO AVOID!

    Tusayan

    • Williams - Travelodge : classic motel with breakfast. 62$ the room for 2 people in april 2022.

For access to Grand Canyon North Rim, we stayed at Page.

The accommodations, although abundant in Page, are however insufficient and very expensive. It becomes very difficult to find accommodation in Page. We strongly advise you to book in advance. Otherwise, you may not find accommodation or pay very expensive. We have tested :

    • Page - Wahweap Campground : campsite located on the edge of lake Powell. This campground is large with many locations. These sites are large, equipped with a table and a barbecue. There is however only a few shady locations. The prices are quite high ($ 26 in 2014). The toilets are new and very clean (pay showers). There is a small supermarket at the office, to buy cold drinks or ice for the coolers.

    Camping de Page

    •  Lone Rock : campsite located on Lake Powell. No location defines, no table or pit fire. Dry toilets available. $ 14 per night in 2017. Emergency solution when the Wahweap Campground is full and the hotels are overpriced.

    • Page - Rodeway Inn : located in the center of Page. Hotel consistent with what you would expect from these chains. Breakfast included. Very high price but it is "normal" we are in Page ($ 220 per room for 4 people in September 2017).
