    Coal Mine Canyon - Arizona

What to do if you have little time : viewpoints

Coal Mine Canyon is on a Navajo country. You so have to buy a 12$ permit at Cameron's visitors center before venturing on these lands. This price includes a night of camping, even if you do not camp!

Advice : late afternoon is interesting, but the shadow rapidly invades the canyon.

     12$ in 2014

Coal Mine is a place rarely visited where you may find yourself alone. The view from the edge of the canyon, near the picnic area is pretty nice, especially in the late afternoon.

Access : from Tuba City, take highway 264 east for 14.6 miles (to mile marker 337) then take a track on left, leading to a windmill, for about 0.6 mile.

    • Sunset Crater

    Lodging

Apart from the rudimentary campground included in the admission price of the park, you have to go to Tuba City to find a place to sleep. We've tested :

    • Tuba City - Quality Inn/RV Park : this RV park has a few tentsites. These sites are spacious enough and as always equipped with a table and benches. The bathrooms are clean. But this campground is rather noisy due to its proximity to the road. The price is reasonable at $ 19 per night per location (September 2014).
