Yant Flat - Utah
What to do if you have little time : main area of Yant Flat
Yant Flat is still quite unknown and therefore very little used. It is a beautiful place with hills shaped like fish scales or turtle shell. This is one of our favorites of the trip in 2017. The best is to camp on site to enjoy the sunset that illuminates the hills of a beautiful orange, and attend the sunrise. In summer, it allows to explore the site in the morning freshly.
If the main area is the largest, other small areas are worth a visit. The western area is the easiest to access. As for the eastern area, it can be broken down into two parts, including Turtle Shell.
Provide plenty of water in the summer. There is very little shade in Yant Flat.
Yant Flat : main area
The hike for Yant Flat is not very long since it is only 1,5 miles to the "entrance" of the site. At first, the sand trail is well marked but at one point you have to leave it to the left to walk through scrub. A hiking GPS is useful for finding access. If the hike is short, it is once there that you will walk the most to explore the area. And there is a lot to see! Upon arrival, the most beautiful part is offered to you.
Access : from St George, take I15 north and at Leeds city exit take exit 22. Continue on 228 for 1.6 miles and turn left onto Silver Reef Road passing under I15 for 1.2 miles. Continue straight on Oak Grove Road for half a mile. Then take the track (without difficulty) right on the FR 032 for 1.5 miles, then left on the FR 031 for 7.3 miles to the car park.
Yant Flat : west area
To go to this area, simply continue the trail instead of turning as to go to the main area. This part of Yant Flat is smaller but steep. We can see streaks. It is very beautiful.
Access : see main area above.
Yant Flat : Turtle Shell
From the main zone, go down to the south and then head east. Then you have to go through a sort of small canyon strewn with rocks. On the other side, is The Turtle going up slightly. A GPS can be useful to find this colorful and photogenic dome.
You can also access this area from the "East area". However, it is much longer and more difficult. There is in particular a steep slope where it will be necessary to use hands. But this option allows you to cross the "East area".
Access : see main area above
Yant Flat : east area
From the main area, the whole Eastern part is also nice to explore even if it is a little less pretty. It is also very extensive and requires several hours of walking in sand or slickrock very sloping and also in the pebble.
From this area, it is possible to reach Turtle Shell on a steep slope where it will be necessary to use hands.
