Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki - South Island

Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki are two of New Zealand's iconic glacial lakes, giving them their distinctive turquoise color. An almost obligatory stopover on the road between Queenstown and Christchurch.

Lake Tekapo is the better-known of the two lakes because of The Church of the Good Shepherd and its lupines lining the beach. This little church attracts a lot of people, even though it's closed.

For a bird's-eye view of the lake and Tekapo village, you can climb (on foot or by car) to the Mt John Observatory Viewpoint.

    Access: on Route 8.

A lake best known for its proximity to Mount Cook National Park. It runs alongside Aoraki Mount Cook Village. However, there is very little parking along the lake for photos. From Glentanner, it's a short walk to the lakeside.

    Access: routes 8 and 80.

    Lodging

    We have tested :

    • Glentanner - Park Center : camping 69€ the night in 2023.
