The Black Valley and the road for Gap of Dunloe are one of the most beautiful raod we have seen in Ireland. The landscapes varies between black mountains, green hills, lakes, rivers, meadows and small waterfalls. It's very nice. The road that leads to Gap of Dunloe is partly one way. Coming from the north (from the city of Beaufort), you won't be able to go to Gap of Dunloe with your car. You'll have to walk or carriage (fee). Coming from the South, you'll be able to drive all along the road. This second option is our favorite, because starting in Killarney, you can make a loop that will allow you to discover beautiful landscapes : Ladies view, Molls Gap et Head of Gap of Dunloe. The latter offers a beautiful viewpoint of Gap of Dunloe. And the road from Head of Gap of Dunloe to Gap of Dunloe is also really pretty.
Access from the North : from Killarney and St Mary's Cathedral, take road R877 north. At the roundabout, turn left on N72 for 4,8 miles and turn left towards Beaufort. Go through Beaufort and continue for 2 miles to the mandatory parking lot, as the road becomes one way after this point. Continue on foot or by horse carriage (fee) for 1,9 miles (one way).
Access from the South : this option is way much longer than the previous one but it's also nicer : from Killarney and St Mary's cathedral, take Mission road for 0,5 mile and turn N71 towards Muckross. Follow N71 for 4,7 miles. You arrive at Torc Waterfall where you can stop. Back on N71 for 5,5 miles to Ladies View. Continue on N71 for 3,7 miles to reach Molls Gap. From Molls Gap parking lot, come back for a few tens of feet to take road R568 for 0,5 mile. Turn right on a small road indicating Black Valley. Follow this road for 1,6 mile and at a crossing, turn right. Continue straight for 5,6 miles at a goose paste take a right. In a few miles you will be at Head of Gap of Dunloe. A few more miles and you'll reach Gap of Dunloe.
