Escalante Petrified Forest State Park - Utah

What to do if you have little time : the 3 short walks

Petit parc d'Etat, à côté de la ville d'Escalante, qui regroupe des bois pétrifiés vieux de plus de 150 millions d'années. Le parc est situé au bord d'un réservoir d'eau, Wide Hollow Reservoir, qui permet de faire du bâteau, du canoë ou de la pêche. Il est équipé d'un camping sympa.

This State Park offers 3 short walks :

- Petrified Wood Cove : 160 yards

- Petrified Forest Trail : 1 mile loop. The beginning of this hike starts with a good climb of 200 feet of elevation. You can see petrified wood.

- Sleeping Rainbows Trail : this 0,75 mile loop, very steep, is an extension of Petrified Forest Trail. It is on this part that we can see the most impressive pieces of petrified wood.

Access : the park is located on US 12, 1 mile west of the town of Escalante.

Lodging

We have tested :

Escalante Town - Prospector Inn : classic motel : 87$ in april 2022. No breakfast.
Escalante Town - Escalante Outfitters Campground : on highway 12. Spaces are small because they are raised and bordered by logs. Quite expansive regard to the size of the spaces : 17 $ in 2013. It's possible to rent a cottage.
Escalante Town - D Motel : on main street (highway 12). Classic motel.
Escalante - Petrified Forest State Park : nice campground in the park along the lake. 20$ the tent site, entrance of the State Park included.
