Damaraland - Namibia
The Damaraland is an almost unmissable step between Etosha and the Atlantic coast. The landscapes are varied between deserts, plateaus, hills, canyons.
Twyfelfontein Country Lodge offers a 4x4 ride to see desert elephants (42€ per person in september 2019 for 4 hours). We loved this ride. Elephants are here in complete freedom in the dry riverbed Hueb.
Twyfelfontein is home to the largest concentration of rock art in Namibia (6€ per person in september 2019). The engravings made by the bushmens date from about 2000 to 6000 years. Discovered in 1921, they are in a perfect state of conservation because of the near absence of erosion. The sites of Organ Pipe and Burnt Mountain are the tourist spots in the area but they are small and not very interesting (3€ per person in september 2019 for the 2 sites). You really have to like this kind of landscape especially as the track to go is pretty bad.
The Grootberg stage is not essential. Although the view of the Grootberg Lodge canyon is pretty, there is not much to see. However, this is the only place where we have seen Hartmann's zebras. The sundowner drive does not bring much (39€ per person in september 2019).
