Banks Peninsula - South Island
Located 1 hour's drive from Christchurch, the Banks Peninsula is often where a trip to New Zealand begins or ends.
Akaroa

Akaroa is the most French of New Zealand towns. It is, in fact, a former French colony. You'll see street and store signs written in French: “La boucherie du village”, “Pot pourri”, “Place de la Poste”... as well as tricolored flags.
Access: 1h20 from Christchurch via Route 75.
Summit Road
No hike
2 to 3 hours
Free
The Summit Road, as its name suggests, allows you to get a bit of height for aerial views of Akaroa Bay. This road is quite winding and not recommended for motorhomes (it is possible with a van). Only on clear days! The downside is that there are few photo stops.
Access: from Route 75.
