Auckland - North Island
Auckland, contrary to popular belief, is not the capital city of New Zealand. Bordered by the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, it is the country's largest city. It's usually the starting point - or ending point - of a New Zealand road trip. Its emblematic Sky Tower has contributed to its international renown.
Ideally, you should spend 2 full days visiting the most interesting sites. Auckland can easily be explored on foot if you enjoy walking. We walked 15 km in one day, having defined our route in advance. So it's hard to estimate how long you'll need to "hike": it all depends on where you're going and where you're starting from.

Interior tour : 21,50€ per person
The first thing you see when you arrive in Auckland is the Sky Tower. Inaugurated in 1997, it is 328 meters high. You can climb it via a large complex at its foot, which includes restaurants, stores, casinos... Two levels are open to visitors:
- floor 60, the Sky Desk, 220 meters high, offering a 360° view of the city
- floor 51.
Stokes Point Reserve
No hike
1 to 2 hours
Depends on mode of transport.
Free website.
For a global view of Auckland at night, you can visit Stokes Point Reserve. Get there just before sunset. You'll be able to take photos by day, then at sunset and finally at night.
Access: take the Auckland Harbour Bridge towards Northcote Point. Position yourself under the bridge for the best view of the city. If you don't have a car, you can get there with an Uber. That's what we did. It's also possible to take a shuttle boat, but this method wastes time and requires a detour.
Mount Eden
45 minutes from downtown
1 to 2 hours
Free
Mount Eden is one of Auckland's 50 extinct volcanoes. It is quite photogenic, with its breathtaking view of the city and its crater in the foreground. It is the highest point in Auckland. The volcano is sacred to the Maoris, so it's forbidden to go down into the crater.
On the way back, stop off at the Whau café for a snack.

Rangitoto Island
2,4 km one way minimum - 40 minutes
A half-day
Ferry : 30€ per person
Rangitoto is a volcanic island, 5 km in diameter, with a summit at 260 m altutide. It is 600 years old, making it New Zealand's youngest volcano.
Several hiking trails, between solidified lava and forest, take you around the island or up to its summit, where the crater is located. Here, an observation platform offers a view of the city and the Sky Tower.
In 2023, we combined the Summit Track, which leads to the crater (259 m ascent over 2.4 km), the Summit Road to McKenzie Bay (not very interesting and long) and the McKenzie Bay Road to the ferry dock. This last path runs along the coastline, offering lovely views over Auckland Bay, with contrasting black rock, blue sky and turquoise sea. The whole trail is almost 12 km long.
