Wellington - North Island
Although Wellington is New Zealand's capital, it remains a human-sized city that's easy to get around on foot. There are many sights to see, including the Te Papa Museum, a free museum of the country's history and Maori culture. The red Cable Car is also an emblem of the capital. Like most major cities, Wellington has its own botanical gardens, also free of charge. Of course, don't miss the climb up Mount Victoria, which offers a lovely view of the city.

For an elevated view of the capital, you need to go to Mount Victoria. It's a steep climb on foot, but it's also possible to get there by car, but you'll miss out on the rest of the park, with its spectacular trees. Beware: many mountain bike trails cross the footpaths. At a bend in the path, there's a nod to The Lord of the Rings, with a quote from the film on a bench.

Although it's one of Wellington's must-sees, we didn't spend much time there (1 hour). It has to be said that we only spent one day in this city, and as the weather was fine that day, we preferred to visit it rather than lock ourselves in a museum!
There are 5 floors with different themes: Maori culture and artifacts, natural and environmental history, ... There's even an earthquake cabin.
