Otago Peninsula - South Island
The Otago Peninsula is the strip of rolling land to the east of Dunedin. Tunnel Beach is at the beginning of this peninsula, and the Royal Abatross Centre at the other end.
Unfortunately, we were unable to visit Dunedin due to heavy rain on the day we were due to visit in 2023.
Tunnel Beach
1 km one way - 15 min
Elevation gain 140m
1 hour
Free
Tunnel Beach is only 1 km away, but the slope is steep! When we visited in 2023, work was underway to soften the slope and make access easier for everyone. At the end, a pretty cliff with an arch and a superb turquoise-blue sea. A tunnel has been dug into the rock. It leads to a small beach at the foot of the cliffs.
Access: 7 km south of Dunedin.
Royal Albatross Centre
No hike
Guided tour of
30 minutes
30€ per person
At the very end of the peninsula is the Royal Albatross Centre. It's an albatross conservation center created by a man who fell in love with these birds.
The visit begins with a 10-minute talk on the life and habits of albatrosses. The guide then takes you on foot to the observatory a little higher up. Behind the glass windows, you can see albatrosses on land or in flight, as well as seagulls, cormorants, terns...
Access: at the very end of the peninsula, 30 km from Dunedin.
