Castlepoint - North Island
Castlepoint is located on the east coast, some 165 km north of Wellington. It's a place that doesn't usually feature on classic tours. A pretty lighthouse, a turquoise-blue sea, a huge rock overhanging the lagoon... the photos we saw before we left made us want to make the detour. Unfortunately, when we went there in 2023, the weather wasn't on our side.

From the beach, it takes just 5 minutes to reach the lighthouse. A concrete path leads to the foot of the lighthouse. You can then walk around it to get an overall view of Deliverance Cove, with the lighthouse in the foreground and Castle Rock in the background.
It is possible to hike to the top of Castle Rock, but given the weather conditions we didn't go.
