A few covered bridges - Oregon

What to do if you have little time : Shevlin

For fans of the movie "The Bridges of Madison County",  Oregon is full of covered bridges. For the most they are well maintained. They are of all kinds and colors.

We recommand to stay half an our at each covered bridge. Shevlin covered Bridge is inside a park so you can stay here a little longer (1 hour).

Shevlin Covered Bridge is located inside Shevlin Park. It is a very well maintained wooden bridge spanning the Tumalo Creek. The rest of the park has little interest except its trees, for some gigantic. From the car park, to at least the covered bridge, count about 3 kms roundtrip.

Access : from exit 137 on US 97, turn West on NW Revere avenue for 492 feet. Take the first on your left (NW Wall Street) for 0.6 mile. Turn right on NW Newport Avenue which becomes NW Shevlin Park Road. Go straight forward for 3.9 miles to the park entrance.

Nice red covered bridge. Even the "road" that goes underneath is made of wood. Do not venture more than a few meters after the bridge as you enter private property.

Access : from the coastal town of Yachats, take eastwards the Yachats River Road for 6.8 miles. At the intersection, turn left on North Yachats River Road for 1.4 miles.

    Lodging

    Nous avons testé :

    • Yachats - Dublin House Motel : 85 $ for 3 in may 2015.
    • Dorena - Schwartz Park : very nice campground under the trees. Very quiet with large tent sites. Hot showers. $18 a night.

    • Smith Rock Campground : it is a walk-in campground : on one side, the parking lot, tables, restrooms and on the other side, 500 feet away the tent sites in the middle of the vegetation with view on the cliffs of Smith Rock. Not bad. $5 per person + $2 for the showers.
