White Sands National Park - New Mexico

What to do if you have little time : a walk in the white sand dunes.

White Sands is a desert of white sand, located in a military area. It's not uncommon that the park is closed temporarly during military tests. Weather conditions in White Sands are those of a desert. It's very hot during daytime (35 °). It almost never rains.

Like every National Parks, a contribution is requested at the entrance to the park. It is $ 25 per vehicle. If you have the "America the beautiful" pass, access is included.

A short walk on the white sand has to be done when traveling to White Sands. Anyway, take care of high luminosity because of the light reverberation of the sun on the sand. At sunset the sand turns to a beautiful orange colour.

Access : White Sands is located in the very South of New Mexico and it is quite isolated. There's nothing else to see in this area. From the closest city of Alamogordo, take US 70 West for 16,2 miles to the visitor's center.
