Omarama Clay Cliffs - South Island

Near the village of Omarama, strange cliffs rise up in the middle of nowhere. No, you're not in the American Southwest, but in the heart of New Zealand's South Island.

These 30-metre-high clay cliffs are visible from the road and easily accessible by car and then on foot. The Clay Cliffs are located on a private estate, and you have to pay $5NZ for the road, which you leave in an honesty box. A path leads to the foot of the cliffs. It makes you feel very small.

Access: 45 km south of Lake Pukaki.
