    Mesa Falls - Idaho

What to do if you have little time : Upper Mesa Falls

We were impatient to discover Idaho. Our disappointment was even greater. Some of the sites we visited would have everything to please, especially those on the Snake River. Unfortunately, these sites are operated at the extreme for  hydraulic power purpose, which disfigures Idaho.

The access to Mesa Fall is 5$ (2012), but it is included with the pass "America the beautiful".

There are 2 waterfalls to see : upper and lower. Upper Mesa Falls is very nice, especially in the morning, because if it's sunny, we can see a rainbow over the falls. Upper is easy to access, thanks to boardwalk. A trail, about 2 miles roundtrip starts at the parking lot, leads to Lower Mesa, but the walk is not worth the pain, because the view over the waterfall is decieving. For a better view over lower Mesa Falls, it's better to drive back south on the road (Scenic Byway) to a parking. From here there is a view over the waterfall, though far away.

Access : from US 20, turn on Mesa Falls Scenic Byway and drive for 14 miles. There is a car park at Upper Mesa.

    Lodging

    We have tested :

    • Rexburg - AmericInn : good motel with a covered pool and jacuzzi, breakfast, gym, all for 89$ in 2007, the room for 4.
    • West Yellowstone - Madison Hotel : good hotel with reasonnable price (75 $ for 4 people).
    • West Yellowstone - City Center Motel : rather expansive (120 $ in 2012), but the rooms are correct, clean and spacious. This motel has a shared kitchenette and a large lounge / dining room. This allows you to eat at the hotel, without having to go to the restaurant.
