    Las Vegas - Nevada

What to do if you have little time : the Strip (main street in Las Vegas).

Las Vegas is the capitale city of gambling and of all excesses !  When you visit the city, we always have the impression of being in a giant amusement park and at the same time on a construction site ! Indeed, in Las Vegas, new buildings are conctantly being built, most of them are Casinos Hotels pushing forward the limits : rooms and slot machines by thousands, dozens of floors, free incredible shows... You'll go from hotels reminding Paris, New York, Venice, pyramids, castles...

Las Vegas is also a megalopolis built in the middle of the desert. It is very hot in summer. During the day, temperature exceeds 104° and at night it does not drop below 95°. There is a huge contrast with the temperatures inside casinos. Be careful, therefore, to the strong temperature differencies when you go out of the casinos.

From our point of view, Las Vegas is not a very attractive city, but it's very well located to explore the southwest at the crossing of California, Utah, Arizona and Nevada. It is therefore, most of the time our point of arrival in the United States.

How much time spending on visiting Las Vegas ? It's hard to say. If, like us, you love wild open spaces and a relative solitude, then a few hours are enough (preferably in the evening). But if you like to party, play, go shopping, see shows, then count several days.

What to see in Las Vegas ?

Las Vegas is a city to visit by walking, if temperature is not a problm to you. In itself, the city is a show, whose "the Strip" is the main street. This street is bordered with hotels, casinon. To attract the customer, these casinos offer some free shows in the evening. Those which have particularly caugh our attention are the following :

    • Bellagio : magnificent spectacle of jets of water synchronized with music. It is very beautiful and almost refreshing due to heat.
    • Mirage : reconstitution of a volcanic eruption, with jets of water, flames. You can even feel the heat during the biggest eruptions. Very realistic.
    • Treasure Island : show featuring a boat and battles between pirates. At the end the boat is really sinking, before reappearing for the next show.

    To see around

    • Valley of Fire
    • Little Finland
    • Cathedral Gorge

    Lodging

    We have tested :

    • Comfort Inn became in 2013 the Red Roof Inn : this hotel is correct. Its price was 100$ in 2013 (room for 4 people on saturday night). It's located on Paradise Road, facing Hard Rock Hôtel, about 20 minutes by foot from the Strip.
    • Super 8 Motel : hotel of a big chain with all the standards for this kind of hotel. Prices may vary, but the average rate is 90$ for one night for 4. Well located at 10 muntes by foot of the Strip.
    • Royal Resort : classic hotel, no breakfast. It is located in the northern part of the Strip not far from the Circus Circus. 94 $ the night the room for 4.

The following hotel are a bit more luxurious and located on the Strip. Indicating a price is at random, as they can vary depending on the day of the week but also according the hour of the day.  However, you should expect prices between 100 and 200 $ for 4 persons.

    • Paris Las Vegas : very good hotel, well located, close to the Caesar's palace and Bellagio. There is a small Eiffel tower (50 meters) and a reconstitution of the et une reconstruction of the french "arc de triomphe".
    • Treasure Island : also a very good hotel located close to the Caesar's palace. Based on the pirats, a free show is given every evening in front of the hotel. This shaw is really worth a visit.
    • Luxor : pyramid-shaped hotel. It is also a very good hotel, but it is a bit out compared to other hotels like Caesar's Palace or the Paris Las Vegas. The interior of the hotel (not the rooms) is oddly unrelated to the pharaohs and pyramids.
    • Excalibur : the standard of this hotel is slightly lower than other presented above. The tariff is obviously feeling it as it is possible to find rooms at about $ 75 for 4. It is located in the southern strip, not far from Luxor.

There are of course many other hotels in Vegas and it is built constantly. We wanted to try the Caesars Palace, the Bellagio and the Mirage, but their rates are very dissuasive (about $ 250).
